Botox in pregnancy

I have an appointment for second application of Botox. I'm not quite sure if I'm pregnant. Is the procedure impossible for me now? What could happen after the application?

I would definitely recommend canceling your treatment for now.It is not known if BOTOX can harm your unborn baby!!!It is a very big risk! There are no adequate and wellcontrolled studies of BOTOX in pregnant women. When pregnant mice and rats were injected intramuscularly during the period of organogenesis, the developmental NOEL (No Observed Effect Level) of BOTOX was 4 Units/kg. Higher doses (8 Units/kg or 16 Units/kg) were associated with reductions in fetal body weights and/or delayed ossification. In a range finding study in rabbits, daily injection of 0.125 Units/kg/day (days 6 to 18 of gestation) and 2 Units/kg (days 6 and 13 of gestation) produced severe maternal toxicity, abortions and/or fetal malformations. Higher doses resulted in death of the dams. The rabbit appears to be a very sensitive species to BOTOX. If the patient becomes pregnant after the administration of this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential risks, including abortion or fetal malformations that have been observed in rabbits.

BTX injections during pregnancy (category C - safety for use during pregnancy has not been established), or breastfeeding. Women who inadvertently were injected during pregnancy thus far have had uneventful deliveries, and to date no teratogenicity has been attributed to botulinum toxin. Nonetheless, it is a category C medication, and delay of injections is recommended until pregnancy is complete and breastfeeding has ended. _"During pregnancy, the effects of the use of certain medicines and treatments on the health and development of the foetus is of often a source of worry for the expectant mother. Botox is a toxin but, if administered correctly, has been deemed safe to use for both cosmetic treatment and for medical conditions such as recurrent migraines. There are a lack of controlled studies into the effects of Botox on pregnant women and their unborn children, therefore it is impossible to say conclusively either way whether it is safe. For the sake of erring on the side of caution, Botox’s manufacturers recommend that it is not used on either pregnant women or nursing mothers. As with the effects during pregnancy, there is a lack of information on whether Botox injections can pass the toxin into breast milk".

There are very few restrictions regarding the use of Botox Cosmetic. Those who are pregnant, nursing or have a neurological disease should not be treated. For more information check out our website at www.niagaraplasticsurgery.com
