Mr. Charles Malata is Consultant Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon with Private and NHS practices in Cambridge and Peterborough. He is principally based at Addenbrooke's University Hospital, Cambridge and consults privately at the Spire Cambridge Lea, Nuffield Health Cambridge and the Peterborough Fitzwilliam Hospitals. He holds the Specialist Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery (FRCS Plast) and has been on the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery since April 1999. He is also a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and a founding member of the exclusive UK Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (UKAAPS). He was recently voted by his peers as one of the top 10 breast plastic surgeons in the UK (Daily Mail poll). His special areas of expertise are cosmetic surgery and breast surgery.

Scope of Practice

Mr. Malata runs an efficient cosmetic surgery practice encompassing the full spectrum of aesthetic surgery. He has special expertise and training in Facial Cosmetic Surgery (face lift/ neck lift, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, endoscopic brow lifts, ear reshaping), Cosmetic Breast Surgery (augmentation, reduction, lifts, gynaecomastia, asymmetry correction), Body Contouring (abdominoplasty, ultrasonic liposuction of all areas, thigh/buttock/arm lifts, waist-line creation, post-massive weight loss surgery), Breast Reconstruction (autologous & implant-based) and Reconstructive Microvascular Surgery.

Training

An experienced and highly skilled surgeon, Mr. Malata trained internationally at world-renowned institutions in both the UK and the USA, He was a plastic surgery resident on the prestigious West of Scotland Training Programme at Canniesburn Hospital (Glasgow) from 1994 to 1997 where he obtained the Intercollegiate Board Specialist Fellowship in Plastic Surgery (FRCS Plast) in 1997. He then undertook superspecialty training in Breast and Cosmetic Surgery in the USA from 1998 to 1999 at Georgetown University Medical Center (Washington, DC) and the Emory Clinic of the Emory University Hospital (Atlanta, Georgia). After his specialist accreditation and superspecialty training, Mr. Malata was, in August 1999, appointed Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust with special interests in Head & Neck Surgery and Breast Reconstruction. He is currently the most senior Reconstructive Breast Surgeon in the Cambridge Breast Unit (Malata CBU Consultant Profile).

Publications and Presentations

He pursues an active academic and clinical research programme and has over 140 publications in the international medical literature including more than 60 peer-reviewed (Malata Medline) papers which are principally on cosmetic surgery, breast surgery, head & neck surgery and microvascular free flap surgery. Mr. Malata lectures nationally and internationally at various forums predominantly on breast and cosmetic surgery (Malata CBU Consultant Profile).

International Responsibilities

Mr. Malata is the current Secretary General of the European Society for Surgical Research (ESSR) 2009-2012 having served as an ESSR board member since 2007. He is a journal reviewer for a number of scientific journals namely JPRAS (Journal of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery), APS (Annals of Plastic Surgery), IJS (International Journal of Surgery), and JWC (Journal of Wound Care). He is an International Candidate for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and is a Founding Member of the exclusive UKAAPS (UK Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) .

Prizes & Awards

During his career, Mr. Malata has received several national and international awards. He won a Scholarship of the Glasgow Royal College of Surgeons and a BAPRAS Overseas Fellowship to undertake superspecialty training in Breast and Cosmetic Surgery in the USA. In 1997 he was awarded the Mentor Prize in Cosmetic Surgery for his published work on a prospective comparison of smooth and textured silicone breast implants for cosmetic breast augmentation (British Journal of Plastic Surgery). Administrative Duties

Mr. Malata is the Cambridge University Medical Student Attachment Director for Plastic Surgery (2003-2010) and a Royal College of Surgeons Assigned Educational Supervisor for trainee plastic surgeons. He actively participates in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He has also set up and runs a Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship to provide Registrars with intensive training in breast and other cosmetic surgery for 6-12 month periods. He was instrumental in establishing a Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship commencing in 2008 and plays a key role in the training of each candidate in receipt of this post. Mr. Malata is the departmental “Research Coordinator” supervising the projects of plastic surgery trainees, a PhD student and medical students. He was also invited to be an Honorary Senior Clinical Research Fellow with the MRC/ University of Cambridge Clinical School, a position he took up in 2006. He is currently collaborating with Cancer Research Institute scientists on the “Adult Breast Stem Cells Study”.
