Prof. Ivan Karel, M.D., DrSc.
He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague in 1950. He defended the scientific degrees of "Candidate of science" in 1967, and "Doctor of medical science" in 1984. He was named assistant professor of ophthalmology in 1983, and professor of ophthalmology in 1990. During the years 1956 to 1997, he worked at the 2nd Department of Ophthalmology of the General Teaching Hospital, 1st Medical Faculty. For the last 20 years, he has acted as a chief physician of the vitreoretinal department and deputy head of department. He retired on 1 July 1997. During his scientific and research activities, he published 145 works, of which 33 were published abroad. He gave lectures at scientific congresses both in the Czech Republic and abroad. During the last 25 years, he has been involved in diagnostics and surgery of retinal detachment, vitreous surgery and retinal disorders, and he achieved immense success and reached many scientific goals in this area. In the area of vitreoretinal research, he was a researcher in 2 governmental projects and 3 grant projects of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic. He is a member of the Czech Ophthalmological Society, and of the Czech Vitreoretinal Society, and is a member of honor of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
