We are a cosmetic surgery clinic in the South West of England run by consultant plastic surgeon Mr James McDiarmid.
The aim of our establishment is to help patients considering plastic surgery to make informed decisions on the safest, most effective and most appropriate procedure for them. When considering the benefits that good plastic surgery can bring, potential side effects must also be considered. We are a surgeon led practice - this means that you will see the surgeon from start to finish and not just on the day of your operation.
The McDiarmid - Hall Clinic specialises in breast surgery (breast augmentation (enlargement), uplift and reduction) face lift surgery, brow lift surgery and rhinoplasty (nose reshaping); as well as recontouring treatments such as abdominoplasty, tummy tucks, liposuction and bodylifts. We also provide non-surgical treatments including microdermabrasion, restylane and laser resurfacing.

Our Philosophy

We are dedicated to providing excellent care for all of our patients on a personal and individual basis. A cornerstone of our philosophy is patient education - truthfully explaining what all the options are and which best suits the patient. We see our role as patient educators, empowering patients to make their own informed decisions about undergoing treatment and advising on the pros and cons of surgery; including possible risks and complications. We also aim to provide the very best quality aesthetic medical and cosmetic surgical procedures by constantly investing in our staff, premises and equipment. We travel to seminars and meetings frequently to update our knowledge and ensure we are at the cutting edge of our industry.
Mr McDiarmid owns many of his own surgical instruments and equipment. This means that he does not have to use a slightly different instrument every time he performs a procedure. The benefit of this is seen during surgery when instruments are transformed into an extension of the surgeon’s hands. Not having to follow the brief learning curve with odd instruments of different weights, lengths and degrees of sharpness is an important quality assurance step which he feels impacts positively on the quality of the result

What Sets Us Apart?

The most important aspect though is our specialist qualifications; actually being an accredited experienced plastic surgeon with a special interest in aesthetics.

We realise that most people have no way of determining whether a clinic or individual is capable and adequately trained to provide the treatment that they seek. We hope that our philosophy of openness and honesty is apparent and that you can clearly see that we have not glossed over possible complications associated with particular procedures. Also, our 'before and after' photographs show the full extent of expected scarring after procedures – please compare our images with those of other clinics. Look for the 'after' tummy tuck picture with the underwear hiding the scar. We believe that information is paramount and that patient satisfaction is far higher amongst patients who knew exactly what to expect.

We have evolved in an era of increasing commercialism in cosmetic surgery and are attempting to enlighten the public about various steps to take, ensuring quality when choosing a surgeon and when deciding whether to have a procedure. We feel that we can clearly distance ourselves from the commercial clinics who advertise using impossibly beautiful models (who have probably never had cosmetic surgery) in the back pages of glossy magazines, and select patients using nurse advisors or sales people, who are then operated on by mainly non-accredited surgeons. The usual line is 'surgery is carried out by our FRCS surgeons' – this means that the surgeon in question usually has a qualification in general surgery, not plastic surgery. Personally we wouldn’t be comfortable with somebody whose only qualification was in general surgery operating on our faces!

We are a small but perfectly formed practice which enables us to provide an extremely high standard of care for our patients. All patients are treated with the greatest level of respect and confidentiality is paramount. We recognise that our patients are all unique individuals with different goals and needs and we feel that we can cater more adequately for this in our small and confidential setting. Essentially we completely avoid a production-line mentality and are happy to spend as long as it takes discussing the details of a procedure. Pre-surgical consultations are performed by Mr McDiarmid and, unlike many commercial clinics, we never use a nurse advisor or salesperson. We feel that the pre-operative consultation is a crucial step in selecting the correct procedure for a particular patient and that it should not be undertaken in the absence of the operating surgeon. We feel that clinics which offer pre-operative consultations with nurses, or even worse with unqualified salespeople, are not only insulting the intelligence of patients but also behaving unethically.

Our clinic has been designed to enable a more personal touch in the care of our patients and to allow minor procedures to be performed on our own premises to our own exacting standards with no compromise. Any major procedures are performed at local private hospitals using fully accredited NHS consultant anaesthetists.

Pursuing technical perfection

Regulations prevent us from suggesting that the quality of our work is much better than average however, we take pride in the technical detail and natural appearance of our work and would like to share our enthusiasm for this with you.

Our Clinics

Plymouth

We are located at Tamar Science Park, Plymouth, close to both Derriford Hospital and the Plymouth Nuffield Hospital. We chose to open our own facility in order to provide an extremely high standard of patient care in the first purpose-built cosmetic clinic in the peninsula. We have three different lasers, an IPL machine and a CACI endermologie system at hand and the ability to perform minor procedures in our rooms but we restrict more major surgery to the larger private hospitals in the South West. Confidentiality is assured in our modern surroundings.

Cheltenham

McDiarmid - Hall Clinic Cheltenham is discreetly situated in a regency townhouse in Cheltenham’s grandest square, Imperial Square, opposite the town hall. There is plenty of parking immediately outside the entrance and, in addition to four lasers and an IPL system, we have an ultrashape treatment facility and CACI endermologie system on site. We remain Cheltenham’s only independent aesthetic clinic run by a specialist consultant plastic surgeon for patients.
