Breast augmentation – Macrolane

Macrolane is a gel containing hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. With the aid of injections, breasts can be increased by up to one cup size in a relatively short time and, above all, with no general anaesthetic. Breasts look and feel natural and are more pleasant to the touch. The disadvantage is the limited duration of the resulting effect, but the procedure can be repeated as and when required.

Who is Macrolane suitable for?

Breast modification using Macrolane gel is suitable for those who require moderate breast enlargement or modelling and who also do not mind that the outcome, despite being long term, is not permanent. It is also a solution for women for whom general anaesthesia is too risky, or who want to avoid scars associated with traditional breast augmentation with silicone implants.

Advantages of Macrolane

  • Immediate results

  • Increase of up to one cup size

  • Effective modelling

  • Natural-looking breasts

  • Biodegradable material

  • No scars

  • No foreign object in the body

  • No general anaesthesia

Prior to the procedure

The actual decision to go ahead with the procedure should follow careful consultation with your doctor. He should know your expectations and requirements. He can then assess whether breast enlargement using Macrolane gel is the optimal method for you. He will also talk you through the details of the procedure and possible complications.

Immediately prior to surgery you should not be suffering from any active infectious disease or other serious illness. It is also necessary to undergo a mammogram in order to confirm that your breasts show no pathological features. Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to any medication in the past.

During the procedure with Macrolane

Breast augmentation is performed by a trained physician, usually under local anaesthetic. The procedure takes about 30 to 90 minutes depending on the amount of gel used. The substance is injected into the breast in such a way that the volume of the breast is increased and the shape modified, whilst at the same time ensuring the natural appearance of the breasts is retained as much as possible.

After breast enlargement with Macrolane

If you have undergone breast augmentation or modelling with Macrolane under local anaesthetic, you can still continue with normal daily activities. After several days, the treated areas might feel tight or even painful. This is caused by the pressure of the gel on the surrounding tissue and will disappear within a few days. If pain arises, standard painkillers will be sufficient to treat it. In the first few days, it's a good idea to avoid exercises that put stress on the treated areas and it is also necessary to avoid excessive pressure on these parts. However, most people are able to continue their daily activities immediately after treatment.

Complications

Complications are very rare and not usually serious. In some cases, pressure can lead to irritation of the tissues and cause mild inflammation. It is not usually a serious complication and the doctor will probably prescribe an anti-inflammatory treatment, after which the inflammation will disappear quickly. Some women may also feel small bumps that bother them. In such cases the problem can be easily corrected.

How long will the results of breast enlargement with Macrolane last?

The results of breast augmentation persist for about a year. The gel, which occurs naturally in the body, is slowly reabsorbed and it is important to repeat the application, usually after 9 to12 months. The volume of gel applied, however, is usually lower than during the first treatment.

Macrolane and breastfeeding

As the gel is injected under the mammary gland, it is highly unlikely that the procedure will interfere with a woman's ability to breastfeed, although as with other modification or breast enlargement techniques, it is not an impossibility. The question is whether women who have problems with breastfeeding after treatment with Macrolane would have had problems with lactation even without any intervention.

Safety of Macrolane

Whenever a product is applied into breast tissue, many women question the risk of developing breast cancer. The safety of Macrolane preparations has been proven partly as a result of years of experience with the application of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of wrinkles and in part as a result of clinical studies that confirm its safety.

As breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, it does mean that some women who underwent breast enlargement using Macrolane may be affected. The prevention of this disease is therefore vitally important.

It is important to inform women that on self-examination Macrolane can cause the breasts to feel different from other breast tissue. However, they soon learn to tell the texture of the preparation apart from other potentially dangerous growths in the breast. In addition to self-examination, women should not forget to have regular mammograms. They need to inform the mammographer that they have undergone breast augmentation using Macrolane. In case the doctor is not able to see through the breast tissue, he or she can also use other imaging methods, such as ultrasound.

Important information for patients: Certain countries have limited Macrolane treatment in the breast area, due to concerns about its effect on radiology examinations. There are concerns that Macrolane injections used for breast enhancement may affect mamography results. For more information, please click here.
