Venkat Charmalaya -centre for advanced dermatology is a unique dermatology institute dedicated to delivery of world class advanced skin and cosmetic treatments to all sections of population. It provides advanced dermatology facilities, (such as phototherapy, including targeted phototherapy, dermatopathology, allergy etc) cosmetic dermatology procedures( such as Botox, fillers, peels etc) ,cosmetic surgery (such as hair transplantation, liposuction), lasers , and dermatopathology. The institute has Dr Venkataram Mysore and Dr Jayashree Venkataram as directors, four dermatologists, 2 plastic surgeons and anesthetist as consultants. The institute attracts patients from around the world for advanced cosmetic procedures. The staff of the institute have achieved nearly 100 publications in national and international journals and over 150 presentations in national and international conferences. The staff have authored 7 books and three educational CDs so far. The institute also has started “ Charmalaya trust” for charitable and research activities. Shraddah is our low cost skin clinic for poor patients and a special leucoderma clinic offers all facilities for patients with vitiligo at highly discounted rates .The institute is in the fore front of community education and has published book, CDs and brochures for public health education.
Infrastructure: Contrary to the common belief that skin departments and clinics are small units, Venkat Charmalaya housed in a specious independent building of over 4200 sq ft, with four floors( see attached brochure). The institute has five computers, with fax, networking, soft ware for patient data and accounts, and broad band internet connection , UPS and generator facility. The building has electronic security. Ground floor has the clinics, waiting room, computer kiosk for patient education, conference room and pharmacy. Basement houses registrar’s clinic, minor theatre, phototherapy rooms, laboratory and a waiting space. First floor has one major theatre, one minor theatre for lasers, postoperative observation room and wards. Second floor has wards, conference room and store. Third floor houses nurse’s quarters and resident doctor’s room.
Staff: There are a total of six consultants, to take care of different subspecialties . In addition , there are also two junior consultants, and two registrars with postgraduate qualification in dermatology. In addition, a plastic surgeon and anesthetist are also part time visiting consultants. All the dermatology staff have teaching experience and have experience in different fields in dermatology such as dermatopathology, photobiology, dermatosurgery, lasers and aesthetics, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy. There are 7 nurses, two lab assistants , five secretaries, one office coordinator, pharmacist, one office boy , security staff, driver and three ayahs as ancillary staff.
The institute runs continuously from 830 am till evening 8 pm and on Sundays between 9 am till 1230 pm. Our daily outpatient attendance is about 50-60 patients. We have a reception area which is serviced by three receptionists at all times. The registration of patients is computerized. There are three waiting areas for patients to allow comfortable seating. Television and worldpsace music are provided in the reception area. Separate toilets for men and women, drinking water facilities are available. A computer kiosk is available for patient education. Health education brochures, posters ,books and CDs are prominently displayed. All our staff have been trained to provide counseling. A nutritionist is available on call.
Procedures: Venkat Charmalaya is known for its expertise in procedural dermatology.There are as many as three procedure rooms( including one major operaton theatre, two minor theatre for laser and other procedures) . A number of procedures are performed daily; these include general dermatology procedures such as biopsies, minor laboratory procedures such as smears, stains, trichoscans and trichograms, excisions, electrocautery, radiofrequency, cryosurgery, iontophoresis etc. Four phototherapy machines( including whole body, Hand-Foot, Scalp and targeted phototherapy) make our phototherapy department one of the best equipped departments in the country. Specialized aesthetic procedures such as lasers, chemical peels, microdermabrasions, Botulinum toxin, fillers, sclerotherapy, etc are also performed regularly . Our centre is well known for advanced surgical procedures such as hair transplantation and liposuction, which are performed daily and patients from all over the world visit us. A unique feature is that we perform all types of vitiligo surgery( including the latest basal cell suspension methods) .
Academic work and continuing medical education: Even though it is a private hospital , great emphasis has been placed on carrying out academic work in Venkat Charmalaya. Dr Venkataram is the author of many books:a book on dermatology, dermatopathology, leprosy, books in kannada for health education and CD atlas on dermatopathology in addition to publishing over 50 articles in various journals. He is a much sought after speaker and has delivered over 80 presentations in national and international conferences. He is also the editor in chief of Journal of cutaneus and aesthetic surgery. He has also been in the fore front of organization of several conferences, including Cosmecon( as scientific chairperson), Dermacon 2009 Bangalore( as scientific workshop chairman), national and International dermatopathology symposiums 2004,2005,2007 in Bangalore. Continuing medical education is an important activity in venkat charmalaya, and we work in close coordination with other associations in this regard. Dr Venkataram is the vice president of Bangalore dermatological society and also the convenor of its academic subcommittee. He is also currently the vice president and convenor of training committee of cutaneus surgeons association ( India). He is also the convenor of taskforce on dermatosurgery and the conveyor of special Interest group on dermatopathology of Indian association of dermatologists, venereologists, leprologists. He is the founder member-chairman, ethical committee of association of hair restoration surgeons of India, and member training committee of International society of hair restoration surgeons. He has been the scientific chair of Cosmecon cruise conference may 2010 and and also national hair restoration surgery conference in September 2010 at Mt Abu. Two presentations from the centre was selected for award paper session at Dermacon 2009.
